I’m Avery… hi! I’m a lifelong bookworm and also happen to be a student in environmental science and resource economics, with a specific passion for sustainable fashion and textile waste.
This space is both my creative portfolio– I want somewhere to keep an archive of my writing, book reviews, research, and all– and a resource hub for those interested in the intersection of environmental thought and textile innovation. Sustainable fashion, and the role that overconsumption of textiles plays in the climate crisis, is still not taught in enough universities, fashion being regarded as “girly” and not worth studying. It’s so important to make people more aware of how to alleviate overconsumption through their everyday purchasing decisions, and I hope some of my embroidery/upcycling work will inspire you to fix up your closet instead of buying a new one.
For me, my entire interest in this field began as critical reading. Though it eventually evolved into research projects examining the environmental impact of the fashion industry, and hands-on work in garment upcycling and textile restoration, reading is always the best place to start. As such, I’ve included a reading list– some of which I’ve read, some of which I haven’t– as a helpful starter guide to these types of issues, and the vast intersections between environmental science, climate crisis, and every industry imaginable. Though there is, of course, fiction on the list as well– not all dry academic writing! As I explore in my blog posts, fiction is an incredible way to situate oneself into this strange and sublime historical moment, and offers deep insight into our shared consciousness of the world. On this website you will also find my environmentally-framed book reviews that explore how various authors address our relationship with the natural world. I analyze both classic environmental texts and contemporary works, drawing connections between literary themes and our everyday choices.
My sustainable fashion articles combine academic research with accessible insights, offering evidence-based perspectives on materials, production methods, and consumption patterns. I believe that understanding the complex systems behind our clothing empowers us to make more intentional decisions.
The upcycling projects showcased throughout this site demonstrate my commitment to extending the lifecycle of textiles through creative transformation. Each piece tells a story of reclamation and reimagination, challenging the notion that sustainability must sacrifice aesthetic appeal.
As a researcher, I’m dedicated to bridging the gap between academic knowledge and practical application. My research projects focus on textile waste reduction, consumer behavior, and the development of circular systems that minimize environmental impact while maximizing social benefit.
I made this website as a space where rigorous analysis meets creative expression—where the theoretical frameworks that shape our understanding of environmental issues find practical application in the clothes we wear and the stories we tell. Whether you’re an environmental enthusiast, fashion lover, reader, or simply curious about living more sustainably, I hope you’ll find something here that inspires your own journey.
